History and how it has served the community Along With Mechanics & Tyres Deal London
Carshalton Library was first opened in January 1931. The library was first introduced inside of a historic building; the building was originally built as a council office in 1908.
The Historic Grade II listed building was designed by a pair of skilled architects named R. Frank Atkinson and W. Willis Gale, Atkinson was a prominent figure who also designed commercial landmarks, including the famous Waring and Gillow department store on Oxford Street; Gale was an influential municipal engineer and surveyor who shaped a great deal of Carshalton’s early 20th-century infrastructure.
The council building soon outgrew the space by the mid-1920s, so they moved their offices to The Grove, which was a prominent 19th-century country house and a private estate- right now, however what was formerly The Grove is now a public park.
In 1931 the old council building reopened as a public library and museum in January, however due to not getting enough visitors, the museum closed in 1933, yet the library stayed open.

Over the next 80 years, the building served not only as a cherished local library but also as a vital community resource. It provided countless valuable services, enriching events, and diverse programmes for residents of all ages, fostering a sense of community and connection among individuals and families.
Throughout its years of operation, the library hosted various workshops, book clubs, and cultural events that encouraged lifelong learning and creativity. This remarkable establishment became a hub of activity and learning, until its unfortunate closure in December 2012.
The closure marked the end of an era for many who relied on its resources and programmes. In the wake of its closure, the community felt a profound sense of loss, culminating in efforts to advocate for the library’s revival and preservation.
A modern Carshalton Library (Westcroft Library) opened, this library is now located inside the extended and refurbished Westcroft Leisure Centre on Carshalton High Street. The old building was a nursey for a while before being sold off for future development.
